The turtles are showing signs of being spoiled. It is probably my fault as I keep them well fed. This week they got a new batch of fish added to their tank. Now usually if I add 16 fish they last an hour maybe two if they are fast.

This time though it is now Sunday and the fish were added on Thursday and there are still over half of them happily swimming around. Guess the turtles have gotten fat and happy and are willing to wait on me rather than have to expend some effort to get fed.

The funny thing is that they can be up on their dock sunning and totally relaxed but if I look over at them it is in the water and start splashing to see if they can attract my attention to add food.

If they expended the time and effort that they do trying to get my attention in chasing the fish their belly would be full. Hey it feeds my ego to know that they watch me and try to attract my attention but it does nothing to get them fed.

How often do we do that with our marketing?

You know how it is, You set something up and it starts to work. Now it is time to start improving it and ramping it up. You are so happy though that something is working that you go on to the next thing.

Instead of continuing to add blog posts, submit articles or find other paid traffic sources to ramp up your process and create more success you get side tracked.

You stop testing and improving your process or adding more to your system because you got fat and happy (but usually not for long.)

Did you…

• Add a new squeeze page system to get more subscribers?
• Create or add a new product to your mix?
• Submit more articles or do blog posts or preferably both to generate traffic?
• Checked your split tests to improve what you are doing?

If not, then like the turtles you will start to get hungry. Once they get hungry the fish will disappear quickly because they will be motivated hunters once again.

One important note it is very easy to keep the ball rolling but once it comes to rest it takes a lot more energy to get it going again then it does to make the moving ball go faster.

Watching the turtles occasionally causes a light bulb to go off in my old often befuddled brain. Last night was one of those occasions. Gizzard and Baby showed me the difference in effort needed to get what you want.

The effort you put out is often times not enough because it is not the right effort. Here is what happened.

I added food to the tank and both Baby and Gizzard wanted to go eat it up as quickly as possible. Nothing new there but both of them were behind the ramp in the tank. Baby is still small enough to fit through the gap without backing up so she snuck right out and started eating. It was easy for her.

Gizzard has gotten so big there is no way he can get through the gap. No matter how hard he worked at pushing through the gap it was not going to happen unless he was strong enough to pull the whole ramp off of the wall.

So Baby is eating quite easily and Gizzard is struggling to get through a tiny gap that he just will not fit through. You could almost see the frustration on Gizzard’s face.

Now had he simply backed up and gone to the other side he could have reached the food quite easily. So despite all the effort by not knowing the path Gizzard did not get any of that food. (For that Baby was quite happy.)

Now here is the thin line you need to balance on when building your business. Focused effort is definitely necessary to be successful but if you focus on the wrong thing no matter how hard and focused your effort you just won’t get what you want without a route that you can fit down.

That is one of the reasons I recommend anyone that is not getting the success that they want and is getting frustrated with all of their effort get Doug Champigny’s Powerstart 2010. The turtles share my work space and that has caused them to pay attention once in a while about what I do.

They have a vested interest in my success because they like to eat. When I have money they get more food and even treats like some feeder fish for a snack.

Now most of the time it is their very basic behavior that gets related here. Animals and people always act in their own self interest and understanding that can be very educational for any marketer.

Once you have taken that into account for your offer the next step is traffic. More targeted traffic = More sales or as the turtles look at More Traffic = More Fish.

So even the turtles got excited when they heard I was attending a free teleseminar tomorrow night at 9 pm. It is being held by two six figure earners, Willie Crawford and Doug Champigny. The topic will be traffic. They will cover 14 ways you can get targeted traffic.

Seems like a stupid question but I do want you to think today. I know that is almost as bad as the 4 letter word work. But there is a reason I am asking the question because in some ways your customers and readers will follow what the turtles do. Use this to your advantage and you will be smarter than a turtle.

Now I always have fish in the tank and turtles feed on fish. Why are the fish still there?

Because the turtles don’t like the idea of taking the effort (ie – work) to catch them. I feed them regularly so rather than take the effort to catch the fish they wait on me to supply their food.

Now occasionally I am away and Maude forgets to feed them or at least not at their regular time. Once they get hungry enough they will take the effort and I end up with one less fish but…

It is only when they get really hungry that it is worth the effort and it is usually just one that does the work but once the fish is caught all of them are more than willing to help with the eating. It becomes a real tug of war in the tank.

Nice story now how does it apply to you and your business?

My supposition is that most of your customers and subscribers are like the turtles. If you are not making money online easily you probably are too.

Here is how I came to that conclusion. Just checked some stats this am and was checking out how I was doing by participating in The Free PLR Giveaway 6.

• Subscribers – 643
• Sales of offer on the verification page – $97
• One oto sale from the site – $23.50
• 23 new downline off the thank you page ad

Now those may not get you excited but I gave away a report that was re-purposed from my blog content. Added a squeeze page system to it (signup verify and download pages) and gave away PLR to all of it but did include the pdf ready to go.

My total time putting the package together was about 3 hours. As you can see I have already netted $120 for that 3 hours not counting anything I make from the new subscribers and this still runs until Sunday so the figures will be bigger.

The content was written on the blog already. Needed to create an image and the pages. Now all of the pages have a thank you page ad already on them.

Now if you grabbed this because I gave you an easy way to use it (the squeeze page system) are you going to take the extra effort to edit the book, change the graphics and make it yours or are you going to use it as is and wait for me to feed you?

Once you answer that you will know if you are smarter than a turtle.

If you are going to create PLR and it is easy to both use and create (if you are blogging regularly the content is already done for you) then you need to make sure that you give people an easy way to use it and the right way. Competition even amongst the turtles can be fierce. Now I still have no idea why they love to eat certain rocks but they do. In this picture Gizmo is pushing Gizzie out of his preferred area. The 3 big turtles always seem to want to compete over the same small are of rocks despite the fact that there are plenty of other areas where they can sort to find their rock throughout the bottom of the tank.

But no…

They have to all be in the same area. Kind of like watching some internet marketers. They all want to compete against each other in the same small arena and keep pushing and shoving for attention. Now if you are big and strong enough to dominate the others that can be fine. Unfortunately, that is not most of us.

Baby on the other hand seems to be the smartest of the turtles.

While the other three are all fighting each other she goes and finds the little places that the others are just too big to get in easily.

She takes advantage of her smaller size and gets the cream of the rocks in the areas where they don’t fit.

She doesn’t have to fight an unfair battle against the much bigger turtles and can search for her rocks in relative peace because the others just don’t want to put in the effort to dominate a small piece they would rather compete for bragging rights against each other.

Niche marketing is using Baby’s tactics. This morning the other three are still busy fighting each other for rocks and she has already gotten what she wants and she is up on top of the ramp relaxing.

Took this picture today of the kids all stacked up helping each other get to the positions they like for relaxation. Now why anyone would want ot stack up like that is beyond me but then I am not a turtle.

They do it all the time so I have to assume (yes a bad word I know) that it is comfortable for them or they would not keep doing it.

Masterminds are one of the ways that I work with others to improve what I do. Not necessarily relaxing per se like the turtles do but helping each other at the same time and mutually beneficial to each other.
