Stubbornness can be an asset

By admin | November 19, 2010

Today I decided to get back to origins here. Long before I realized that I could get the turtles to do the blogging I used to pay attention to what the turtles did and relate it to marketing. Of late the turtles have been talking for themselves.

Yesterday I was getting ready to clean the tank and put things back to the way I like it. The fat ones had pushed the ramp almost to the bottom with their weight and Gizzie wanted to go under it.

That is the normal path that he takes and even though it was lower than it usually was and he really did not fit through.

It would be much easier to back up and go around but say what you want about the turtles when they decide to do something they just keep going.

Now it took about 3 minutes and I though for sure he was stuck under the ramp. But, he just kept going until he squeezed himself through. It was not easy and it was not smart as he could have backed up a step and gone around in 10 seconds instead.

Their stubbornness is why the arrangement of the tank never stays as is. When they run into an obstacle they just keep going until they overcome it.

There is a big lesson there for new and even seasoned marketers. All too often it does not take much for us to stop. You hit a little obstruction and you stop dead in your tracks.

Now some time it is smart to stop and go an easier way but unfortunately most just stop and have no idea where to go from there. In those cases it is important to be more like the turtles and just keep moving until you overcome the obstacle.

The turtles have learned to do just that. It is not always the smartest way to do something but they always seem to get done what they started to do.

It is like list building. You know you need to do it but you always seem to find an obstruction in your way. Instead of just working through the obstructions you stop.

You know you shouldn’t but you are looking for the easy way. Well all ways have some obstructions and you need to overcome them. It may take you a bit longer than the smartest way but if you bulldoze through like the turtles do you will get there. In the end that is what matters.

If you would like a good way to avoid some of the obstructions (not all – there are always obstructions in anything new) check out List Building Sniper.

Well that is all for today and you will probably hear from baby next week. He is ready for more fish so anxious to blog.

Good topic Mike. This happens a lot with online business owners, simply because there are so many different ways to do everything, that it can be hard knowing which way to take. That decision will often stop people from taking any action.

@Joel Osborne – Yes despite knowing he was doing it the hard way he always gets where he wants to go. Does not always leave the tank the way I would like but gets what he wants.
