Keywords are important but…
By admin | August 16, 2009

They need to be profitable. It is a Sunday and the turtles are enjoying basking on the ramp while I work. Gee maybe I should be a turtle.
When I first created this blog the idea was to take a look at marketing from a different perspective using the actions of the turtles. It is fun to do and makes for good lessons. Often when something is approached in a different manner it makes a better lesson.
One of the things that happened almost immediately is that I started getting traffic for turtle related keywords even though the turtles are used as an example and the primary topic is not turtles but marketing.
I decided to do some keyword research and then check out if this was another way to generate some extra income for the care and feeding of the then 3 but now 4 turtles.
This was a case where it quickly became apparent that if I wanted to I could dominate quickly for a variety of turtle terms and I do get traffic from a variety of long tail terms.
With a bit of work I could probably get top 3 rankings for 20 or more keyword terms and while that would not generate a huge amount of traffic it would be enough to be worth the effort if…
When I did this I quickly found out that there were a few problems with getting traffic about turtles.
- Almost no products to sell
- No decent affiliate program
The vast majority of keywords that I came up with in doing research had no or very few advertisers. Checking through affiliate programs there was only one Clickbank product and the only turtle specific vendor does not have an affiliate program.
Even though I could easily generate traffic and create keyword specific content that would allow me to easily dominate in the search engines there was no way to easily monetize it.
As I always test with affiliate products first there was no easy way to see if this was profitable enough to create my own product so I keep to the marketing lessons and have never put the effort into targeting those words.
The traffic that would be generated would probably not be interested in the marketing lessons. As that is what monetizes this site and keeps the turtles in food it would not be worthwhile.
Instead I did add some banners for those finding this through turtle related terms to a good ebook that I found helpful on Clickbank.
On Wednesday evening Steve Roye and I will be going through the exact processes we use to do this type of research. You can get the details here on Keyword Research
If you got here looking for turtle information I do strongly recommend the Turtle Guide Book – just click the banner below..

Your right… we hear everyone talking about finding keywords, and it really isn’t hard to find them. But like you said, it’s finding the good ones that is hard, the ones where people are willing to spend money and where people are offering a product.

You are so right Mike,
A lot of times when you find the keywords that seem to have a lot of traffic and very little or no competition, it is because the people searching for those terms are not buyers.
You need to do your research, as you have obviously done, to find out if the keyword has any commercial viability.
Looking forward to the call Mike!
