Fighting over the same thing as everyone else?
By admin | November 1, 2008
Last night the three turtles were as usual fighting over the same few pieces of gravel. Now I am not sure why, but they love to sort out certain pieces of gravel and then suck on them before spitting them out.
The funny thing is that they ALWAYS seem to be fighting over the same small section.
Now the tank is sizeable (about 12 inches deep and almost 3 foot long) or over 400 square inches of bottom space. Yet they always fight over the same small space. Where they fight changes day to day but they always want to use the same space at the same time.
You will never see them digging through the gravel in different spots. Always where the other two are.
Now unfortunately I see that all too often with marketers too.
Just like the turtles every one wants to fight for the same few pieces of gravel when there are thousands of pieces available. In fact on line there are literally millions of different niches.
Why does every one seem to want to fight over the same little spots?
What most don’t understand is that trying to compete in the marketing to internet marketers is extremely competitive and can be self defeating.
Taking the knowledge and applying it to other niches can be extremely profitable and a lot less competitive. Something you really should consider rather than fighting like the turtles do for the same little piece of turf.
Not sure how to find a profitable niche that fits you? I strongly recommend you check out Finding Profitable Niches by Teri Champigny. It will save you time and help you to find areas where you can compete easily.
Or you can be like the turtles and keep fighting for the same little bit of gravel.

I couldn’t agree with you more.
People get tired of being promoted the same stuff all the time.
Don’t follow the crowd, be an adventurer and carve your own path. Your business will prosper.

Mike,
Great points here. I think it’s a reflection of how we as humans are ‘wired’. Most of us are not people who want to be ‘loners’, we want to be social. Hanging in a group means we don’t have to get out of our comfort zone.
I think that holds true in our marketing efforts, trying to get ‘in to’ the Internet Marketing niche seems easy and there are a lot of people who we can ‘socialize’ with, but unless you have a few thousand people who are hanging on your every word, it’s tough.
Exploring other niches means that we have to leave our comfort zone and go out on our own, which a lot of us don’t want to do.
Teri’s book can be a great resource, but you also have to obtain some knowledge, apply it, and the measure the results. K.A.R. (Knowledge-Application-Results).
Great post, keep up the great work.

Mike,
This is a great metaphor to Marketers fighting over the same niches. What a clever idea.
Yes, there are tons of niches available for everyone to get into. There’s no need to fight over the same ones, however, competition creates excellence. If you have a unique view of a specific niche, take turtles for example, then I think it is okay to get into an already popular niche. Just make sure you’re position is unique.
