Are you smarter than a turtle?
By admin | March 5, 2009
Seems like a stupid question but I do want you to think today. I know that is almost as bad as the 4 letter word work. But there is a reason I am asking the question because in some ways your customers and readers will follow what the turtles do. Use this to your advantage and you will be smarter than a turtle.
Now I always have fish in the tank and turtles feed on fish. Why are the fish still there?
Because the turtles don’t like the idea of taking the effort (ie – work) to catch them. I feed them regularly so rather than take the effort to catch the fish they wait on me to supply their food.
Now occasionally I am away and Maude forgets to feed them or at least not at their regular time. Once they get hungry enough they will take the effort and I end up with one less fish but…
It is only when they get really hungry that it is worth the effort and it is usually just one that does the work but once the fish is caught all of them are more than willing to help with the eating. It becomes a real tug of war in the tank.
Nice story now how does it apply to you and your business?
My supposition is that most of your customers and subscribers are like the turtles. If you are not making money online easily you probably are too.
Here is how I came to that conclusion. Just checked some stats this am and was checking out how I was doing by participating in The Free PLR Giveaway 6.
- Subscribers – 643
- Sales of offer on the verification page – $97
- One oto sale from the site – $23.50
- 23 new downline off the thank you page ad
Now those may not get you excited but I gave away a report that was re-purposed from my blog content. Added a squeeze page system to it (signup verify and download pages) and gave away PLR to all of it but did include the pdf ready to go.
My total time putting the package together was about 3 hours. As you can see I have already netted $120 for that 3 hours not counting anything I make from the new subscribers and this still runs until Sunday so the figures will be bigger.
The content was written on the blog already. Needed to create an image and the pages. Now all of the pages have a thank you page ad already on them.
Now if you grabbed this because I gave you an easy way to use it (the squeeze page system) are you going to take the extra effort to edit the book, change the graphics and make it yours or are you going to use it as is and wait for me to feed you?
Once you answer that you will know if you are smarter than a turtle.
If you are going to create PLR and it is easy to both use and create (if you are blogging regularly the content is already done for you) then you need to make sure that you give people an easy way to use it and the right way. Most will take the easy way. To fully understand the “hard” (it really isn’t hard but does take that 4 letter word) check out The PLR Video Tutorials from Doug Champigny.
Finally I am putting together a step by step report on exactly how I did this project and some other monetization that is not even mentioned here that will continue to pay me for this effort into the future. See $40 an hour for the 3 hours aint bad but this 3 hours will make me a lot more than that before I am done. Let me know what that report would be worth to you when it is done by leaving a comment.
The Turtle Dad – and yes I am smarter than a turtle – are you?

Challenging post Mike. Not sure I am or have been. I’m still struggling with shiny objects, and one big project. Right now I need to focus on the big project and get it launched. And then perhaps make a goal of one small project a week.

Hmmm….interesting concept. Very thought provoking. It really makes you think about how you go about your business. Do you take plr products that you pick from where ever and just plop them on a sales page (if you even do that) with a buy now button and hope you get some traffic, or do you take that product, extract some content from it, edit it somewhat, and create an additional funnel?
I will admit, I will lean the way of former at times, but I would like to lean more towards the latter…in fact, I had thoughts of doing just that last evening as I was looking at the profile and the website of someone who is following me on twitter, contemplating making the decision to follow them back.
Now this idea does involve some (arghhhh) work, but will it benefit me in the long run? Absolutely. So I think it’s a great idea.
Smarter than a turtle? Sometimes and sometimes not…depending on the mood of the day, or for that matter, hour.
Keep up the intriguing posts Mike.

As I read that post I had to look in the mirror because I believe I saw myself. You are so right about wanting to take the easy way out. But because of these post and a few others I am beginning to understand your method to this madness, And it is beginning to sink in and look good. Thanks to you and the turtles. Boy, those guys are really smart.

Hi, Mike!
As a PLR Master, I was about to say Yes, I’m smarter than a turtle…
Then I realized I haven’t seen you here cleaning my environment nor feeding me at regular times each day, so now I’m not so sure…
But I SM smart enough to read your blogs each day, so that has to count for something, right?

Another great post Mike!
Sadly, I think many marketers are like turtles and want to take the easy way out without working at editing or changing content.
But it’s those of us who do take the time that stand out from everyone else.

Wanted to reply here because I think the big point got missed even by two guys that know PLR and that is to ake advantage of that fact from the beginning. Now it took me longer to put the pages together than the content because it was already written but giving the pages makes it easy to use and more will use it my form than take the taking the time to make it their own. That is definitely to my advantage and will generate many times what it has to date long after the giveaway is over.

I have learned so much from the turtle posts during the few months that I almost have to admit that they are smarter…
But that forces me the challenge to catch up and do better!
One day I will give them an extra treat as thank you…
